Mechanical Properties: Several research projects within the group investigate how the mechanical properties of given materials change under specific conditions, such as radiation. A core focus of this research is to take advantage of and optimize small-scale mechanical testing techniques. These methods are critical to evaluating specific regions of interest, reducing the hazard of working with radioactive and toxic substances, and accessing thin surface layers in ion-beam-irradiated materials and in thin films.
Nanoindentation, micro compression testing, micro tensile testing, and micro bend testing are techniques employed in this research to obtain property data. However, in order to understand and fully appreciate the changes of a material’s mechanical properties, it is essential to pinpoint the microstructural features that cause these changes and to correlate the observed structures with the observed properties. Only the combination of both, structure and property, leads to a comprehensive understanding of the material.
Nanoindentation allows for fast and efficient mapping of materials properties, including hardness and elastic modulus. The tools listed under the facilities tab are used to evaluate the properties of a material on a localized scale.
Micro compression provides further insight by probing localized volumes that exhibit artifacts of interest (grain boundaries, interfaces, etc.). Direct measurements of yield strength and critical resolved shear stress are possible. This approach is applicable for nanometer to micrometer sized samples and can be carried out in-situ in transmission electron microscopes and scanning electron microscopes, such that dislocations and other deformation mechanisms can be observed in real time.
Further materials examination techniques like micro 3-point bend testing and micro tensile testing provide more insight into post-yielding behavior. Specifically, micro tensile tests provide properties like total and uniform elongation and ultimate tensile strength (UTS). It is found that the properties that are measured on the micro scale match well with the properties on the macro scale, and therefore micro-scale measurements enable the assessment of mechanical properties for ion-beam-irradiated materials and similar materials that are inherently limited in sample size and availability.
Microstructure Analysis: Microstructural investigations give insight to the root cause of changing mechanical properties. Furthermore, one can assess the influence of plastic deformation on the properties at a local region and begin to impose these data across the material as a whole. For example, being able to see how plastic deformation changes the irradiation-induced microstructure is an essential factor in understanding the behavior and eventual lifetime of a material.

Many engineering environments are non-ambient. In order to understand how a material reacts in a non-ambient environment, simulated and well-controlled conditions must be applied. Our research team focuses on high-temperature and liquid-metal environments, such as can be found in liquid-metal-cooled reactors and solar concentrators. The autoclaves are used to carry out long-term testing to evaluate corrosion rates. The material degradation is subsequently characterized through microscopy studies.
Current efforts are focusing on high-temperature heavy metals (e.g., lead-bismuth eutectic) in static, oxygen-controlled environments. The aim of this project is to provide sufficient oxygen in the liquid metal such that the submerged steel can form a protective oxide layer that prevents catastrophic dissolution.
In addition to liquid-metal corrosion, oxidation of reactor-grade materials in high-temperature steam environments is of interest to aid the development of accident-tolerant fuels. Fe-Cr-Al alloys as well as Mo and SiC are investigated for this purpose.
The question is, “How does irradiation change the mechanism of materials degradation and corrosion?” In order to study these phenomena, an Irradiation and Corrosion Experiment (ICE) was developed together with Los Alamos National Laboratory. The experimental designs and the results of the first experiment are presented in the following two publications:
Understanding and predicting a material’s behavior in its environment is important, and the ability to optimize these properties via material design and fabrication is even more so. This leads us to the question, “How can we produce materials which are more capable and also mitigate the degrading effects that are often observed with applications in nuclear and other extreme environments?”
On a larger scale, we are evaluating the use of additive manufacturing to produce functionally graded components. This usage not only would take advantage of additive manufacturing’s ability to create unique geometries but would also allow for property transitions as a material gradient is fabricated. Several functionally graded metal components have been prepared by our collaboration partners in conjunction with Thermocalc modeling predictions that we performed at UCB. Post-fabrication microstructural and property investigations have been carried out to assess the quality of these graded materials as a function of the fabrication parameters.
On a smaller scale, we investigate alternate routes to manufacture true 3D nanostructured materials. Examples include powder processing via cold compacting, and direct PVD processing of insoluble or solubility limited materials (Cu/Nb, Cu/Fe). It was found that solid nanostructured materials can be produced at a macroscopic scale using this route. The large number of fcc/bcc interfaces are thought to be efficient defect sinks for radiation-induced damage, enabling the material to be resilient in extreme radiation environments.
